Far Infrared and the Recovery Edge in Sports Performance

Until recently, the conversation about athletic recovery centered on three things — sleep, nutrition, and the contrast of ice baths against heat exposure. Far infrared sauna therapy was treated as a useful adjunct, but rarely as a primary recovery tool. That assumption is being tested by a new generation of research, and the results are reshaping how serious athletes think about recovery. 

In October 2025, the University of Jyväskylä in Finland published the results of a six-week trial in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living. Forty team-sport athletes were divided into a group using post-exercise FIR sessions and a control group receiving passive recovery. The FIR group showed improvements in loaded jump performance and short-distance sprint speed that exceeded what training alone produced, alongside reductions in muscle soreness and improved perceived recovery during periods of intensive competition.

What makes the finding more compelling is that an earlier 2024 study in Retos compared FIR directly against traditional sauna and warm water immersion in athletes recovering from submaximal exercise. FIR outperformed both — suggesting that the recovery effect is not simply heat exposure but is tied specifically to the infrared wavelength itself. This matters because if the effect were purely thermal, any heat source would do. The fact that FIR consistently outperforms equally hot alternatives points to something the wavelength is doing at the cellular level — likely involving mitochondrial energy production, antioxidant gene activation, and the deep vasodilation that supports muscle repair. For athletes, the implication is direct. Recovery is no longer just about resting harder. It is about choosing the right signal to support the body that is recovering.
